Dealing with extreme situations*

Our sailing boat offers little room to get out of each other's way during the deployment. Added to this is the tension of searching for people in distress at sea. It is therefore important that the respective team works well, resolves conflicts with each other without violence and also enjoys the deployment. In critical situations, we act according to standards that will be communicated to you during the preparation phase. As is usual at sea, the following also applies to us: in case of doubt, the skipper has the final say in the decision. The following questions invite you to assess your own personal experience in dealing with exceptional situations. These assessments will help us to put together a well-balanced crew.

On the TROTAMAR III, the roles of skipper and head of deployment (HoD) are combined in one person. Nobody can apply for these position(s). He is ultimately responsible for everything. Be it on board or in contact with third parties (including the authorities).

You can apply for the following positions:
(Multiple answers are possible. Please note the requirements. If you are in possession of certain required licenses/certificates, please send us a copy).

Co-Skipper: You must have a sports boating license (SSS, alternatively SKS) or an equivalent license or you must have a lot of experience at sea with a sailing boat. You behave on board the TROTAMAR III as if you were the skipper. Your tasks include driving the boat independently. You keep track of the weather and can navigate. You are particularly responsible for the safety of the boat and compliance with the safety precautions on board. Of course, all of this in consultation with the skipper/HoD. Technician: You have experience maintaining and repairing electrical and/or mechanical systems. Ideally, you know the repair requirements of a sailingboat.

Media Person: You are responsible for taking photos and short videos during our deployment. This includes the documentation of illegal actions (pull/pushbacks), the documentation of our “operational work”, as well as our everyday life on board. You have an eye for good images, are familiar with the world of social media, can create small, motivating videos even under time and emotional pressure and have knowledge of the processes at CompassCollective. You send your unedited material promptly to the back office, which will further process it and, if necessary, publish it, taking our ethical principles into account.

Quartermaster: You are responsible for all supplies. This includes all consumer goods and food. You also have an eye for order and cleanliness both in the house and on the boat. During the preparation and follow-up time on land, you ensure that there are enough ingredients for the next meals. You don't have to do everything yourself. But you have the overview! And you motivate the crew members to keep the shared space neat and tidy in a spirit of care and solidarity.

Dinghi-Driver: You are responsible for maintaining and securing the dinghy including the outboard motor. You steer and lead the dinghy in an operation in close coordination with the HoD on board the Trotamar III. Quick decisions and self-protection, even in rough seas, are necessary skills. You need experience in driving a rescue boat or with similar types of boats and should be able to work well under pressure.

Dinghi Communicator: You support the dinghi driver in maintaining and securing the dinghi. During the operation, you are responsible for communicating with the people on the boat being supported and issuing life jackets. In addition, you are the only “deck hand” on the dinghy. You should be able to work well under pressure and have very good language skills in English and/or French.

Awareness Position: You have experience with awareness work in political groups and can bring this ability to bear without diminishing the personal responsibility of each crew member for a mindful approach to strengths and weaknesses.

Medic: You need medical training and may already have experience operating in adverse conditions. Due to our minimalist equipment, you must be aware that you in particular have to deal with the fact that you may not be able to provide much more than first aid and have to hope for official evacuations (which experience shows that they do happen!!!). For which deployment are you applying?

From February 2025 we will go on mission in the central Mediterranean again. We plan the assignments for 3 weeks, some last 4 weeks (these are marked). We would like to be at sea for 13 days and use the other days for preparation and follow-up. Please indicate during which periods you are available for our assignments.
