The Trotamar III left Lampedusa for the Tunisian route at around 8 o’clock this morning. The crew of six under skipper Matthias is now searching for people in distress at sea in order to help them with the resources available on board.
The Tunisian route is currently one of the most important passages for refugees setting off from the African coast. With good weather conditions, unseaworthy, overcrowded boats leave Tunisia or Libya almost every day and set off for Europe. We want to save people fleeing across the Mediterranean from death by drowning or dying of thirst and alleviate their immediate suffering.
Yesterday the Trotamar III was on anchorage in Lampedusa – next to two other sailing ships from the #CivilFleet: the Nadir from @resqship and the Dakini. The crew completed another training session with the dinghy: They practiced handling the so-called CentiFloats. These are long rescue hoses that people can hold on to in the water. The crew also practiced the transfer of an unconscious person on board the Trotamar III.
